Horticultural crops are decidedly underrepresented, accounting for less than 10% of total research publications in either time period. Rice and field crops combined remain relatively prominent in the stock of publications, accounting for over 50% of the total in either time period. An upswing in livestock research publications is noted, a trend that parallels the growing importance of the livestock industry in Korea. For comparative purposes, the author tabulated by commodity group the official research publications released by ORD for the period 1963-1978. The low level of horticultural publications mirrored CABA data. Livestock publications as a percentage of total published research reports were somewhat higher for ORD than for CABA tabulations, although unlike the CABA data, there was no significant gain in the relative percentage of published livestock research. Given the range of commodities in the horticultural and livestock sectors and the biological and ecological complexity of advances in productivity in these commodities, the publication data presented here reinforce conclusions drawn from the analysis of budget data. These two commodity sectors have not received research attention commensurate with their increasing importance in Korean agriculture.
